TMJ
The temporo mandibular joint (TMJ) is one of the most complicated
joint systems in your body and the most active – moving at
least 2,000 times a day!
It connects your lower jaw to your skull so, for example, it swings
into action every time you eat, drink, talk or yawn. If the surfaces
of your teeth do not line up properly, this can, over time, affect
your TMJ and your jaw muscles, and it can also affect your teeth
of course, especially if you grind them together during the night,
or you tend to clench your jaw when you’re feeling stressed.
The symptoms of TMJ can include headaches
and migraines, dizziness, a clicking or grinding sound when
you eat for example, a ringing sound in your ears or even, in the
worst cases, severe head, neck and ear pain.
The good news is that we can help by realigning your ‘bite’,
or the way your teeth fit together when your mouth is closed. We
may also recommend, for example, that you wear a bite-raising appliance
during the night, to prevent the surfaces of your teeth from grinding
together.
If you have any concerns about TMJ please feel free to contact
us here at the clinic.
